This collaboration allows EFG members to access discounted rates and favourable terms to measure, manage, and monetise soil carbon on their farms.

The decision follows a comprehensive review of the soil carbon market, assessing the integrity, methodology, and market readiness of multiple providers. The review concluded that Regenerate Outcomes and Ecometric offer robust, farmer-aligned programmes, enabling EFG members to maximise both environmental impact and financial benefits.

Supporting farmers to take control of carbon

Soil carbon programmes allow farmers to track and measure soil carbon over time, building datasets that support informed management decisions and can generate verified carbon credits. These credits can either be retained to offset on-farm emissions, sold to supply chain buyers, or sold on the voluntary carbon market, creating an additional income stream. The key is that farmers have control of what they do with their carbon.

The commercial opportunity of trading soil carbon depends on variables such as weather, farm management practices and soil types. This means that the amount of carbon stored in soil can go up and down year by year. However, on average over a 20-year period, EFG expects about 3tn/ha/annum CO2e could be stored in soil with a modest carbon price leading to a gross margin of around £60/ha/annum. This might be an important additional income stream for farms over the coming years.

Digby Sowerby, Managing Director of EFG, commented:

“After careful analysis of the soil carbon market, we are pleased to endorse Regenerate Outcomes and Ecometric as trusted providers. Both offer high-integrity programmes that put decision-making firmly in the hands of farmers. Our priority is to ensure members can engage in carbon markets confidently, with access to transparent, science-based programmes that support both environmental outcomes and commercial resilience.”

Ecometric CEO, David Wright added:

“We are excited to work with EFG to scale routine soil carbon monitoring across their membership, in support of improved soil management and the generation of financial reward for capturing and storing carbon dioxide.”

Regenerate Outcomes Director, Tom Dillon added:

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Environmental Farmers Group to enable more farmers to see the benefits of improved soil health on their farm, through the package of bespoke mentoring plus revenues from soil carbon credits. Now is the right time for British farmers to secure a soil carbon baseline so that the environmental benefits they’re delivering on farm can be recognised and rewarded now and in the future.”

High-integrity soil carbon

EFG has taken a pragmatic approach in assessing market providers, looking at both the scientific and commercial offering. From an environmental perspective, EFG has been supported by Mark Kibblewhite of MK Soil Science Ltd and an Emeritus Professor at Cranfield University. Based on his work, EFG has decided that a ‘measure and remeasure’ approach to quantifying change in soil carbon and generating soil carbon credits is most appropriate for decision making and for trading high-integrity carbon credits. Both Ecometric and Regenerate Outcomes complete intensive physical sampling with carbon traded based on outcomes rather than being purely modelled.

From a commercial perspective, Trethowans (solicitors and EFG sponsors) and Natural Capital Advisory have acted for EFG in reviewing the legal agreements that farmers will need to sign to participate in soil carbon programmes. Although both programmes comprise of long-term commitments, both offer methods to exit early and EFG has also negotiated specific terms for EFG Members to ensure its members have the ability to own the soil carbon data generated.

Advantage of Scale

EFG will facilitate trading carbon credit sales (where members wish to trade) through its existing network of buyers, leveraging the cooperative’s scale to secure competitive pricing for members. As well as benefiting members, its size offers an advantage to buyers seeking significant quantities of high-integrity, UK-based carbon credits through a single point of contact. Overall, EFG is aiming to achieve over 50,000tn CO2e carbon sequestration in 2026, clearly demonstrating how farmers can contribute to national environmental targets whilst increasing farm profitability.

As part of the new agreements, EFG members will receive savings of between £1/ha and £4/ha. As EFG’s Membership subscription fee is only £1.25/ha, this means that it is worth joining these soil carbon programmes as an EFG Member. Those who are members of the farmer cooperative will also benefit from selling together through existing networks of buyers, leveraging the cooperative’s scale (currently 387,000ha) to secure competitive pricing for members.

EFG Members have received full information on the offers available to them and EFG has held two information sessions in early November. Farmers who are not yet members but are interested to learn more are encouraged to either express an interest in joining EFG or to email efg@gwct.org.uk for more information.

]]> 141890 Heritage Fund Awards £100k to Swaledale & Wensleydale Farmers for Conservation https://www.newsanyway.com/2025/01/16/heritage-fund-awards-100k-to-swaledale-wensleydale-farmers-for-conservation/ Thu, 16 Jan 2025 13:00:41 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=138879 The newly formed Wensleydale & Swaledale Environmental Farmers (SWEF) Group has successfully secured £100,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to advance its conservation goals and support the development of its cooperative.

This farmer-led initiative represents a significant opportunity for the 133 farmers who have shown interest in joining. Collectively, their farms span 54,000 hectares, accounting for 65% of the land area in Swaledale and Wensleydale. With this extensive coverage, SWEF aims to achieve large-scale biodiversity restoration, improve water quality, and work toward net-zero carbon emissions.

The group’s innovative model is designed to generate income through private natural capital markets, ensuring the long-term sustainability of its environmental efforts. By fostering collaboration, SWEF is set to drive positive ecological change across this iconic landscape.

Mark Willoughby local tenant farmer and chair of SWEF said:

“Thanks to National Lottery players, we are delighted to receive this award and recognition that farmers play a central role in creating and maintaining our iconic Dales landscapes. It’s essential that environmental improvement goes hand in hand with food production and with the loss of £10million in subsidies from the area, farmers will need to find alternative revenue streams. Emerging natural capital markets are a potential new source of income, but they are difficult for individuals to navigate alone. SWEF’s cooperative model provides an assured trading platform that reduces risk and operates at a scale that offers much bigger opportunities.”

The Heritage Fund grant has enabled the appointment of project officer Emma Orde-Powlett who will work with the group to implement a catchment-scale conservation plan based on ecological assessments of its members’ land holdings. This will enable SWEF to establish a wide range of farmer-led initiatives aimed at protecting and improving important habitats and populations of threatened wildlife, such as curlew, golden plover, hen harrier, merlin, red squirrel and Atlantic salmon, for which the Dales are famous. It will also incorporate projects to repair stone walls, hay barns and sheep folds and improve water quality in the Ure and Swale river catchments and reduce flooding through its Water Restoration Fund.

Mark continued:

“I strongly believe that a conservation plan, designed by SWEF farmers, local estates, and land managers, can be more effective at delivering environmental outcomes and better value for money than a top-down approach. We have the knowledge and expertise to maintain and enhance our rich environmental and cultural heritage.”

As part of the culture and community aspect of SWEF’s project supported by the Heritage Fund, a series of ‘living history’ films will record the stories of farmers from the area. Much of the local heritage is held in the oral traditions of the two dales. The living histories project will record these traditions for posterity and chronicle the changes in farming life from the different world of their grandparents to today’s reality where many small family farmers have to take on other jobs to make ends meet.

Swaledale farmer and SWEF board member Linda Rukin said:

“I would urge all farmers who have so far expressed an interest in SWEF to join as full members, not only to benefit from accessing natural capital markets, but also to share resources and gain a stronger voice to ensure the continuance of our cultural heritage and communities. SWEF offers farming families an opportunity to help secure a sustainable future.”

Once its conservation plan is in place, SWEF aims to secure funding for restoration projects through a blend of public and private finance including sponsorship, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and corporate Environment Social Governance (ESG) investment. The cooperative’s partnership with the UK’s leading wildlife research charity Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) guarantees both farmers and investors verifiable delivery. The GWCT’s subsidiary Natural Capital Advisory (NCA) will carry out the environmental monitoring, guaranteeing the highest level of assurance and offering natural capital investors a single point of contact.

GWCT chief executive Teresa Dent CBE convenes the SWEF steering group. She said:

“SWEF and its sister cooperatives Peakland Environmental Farmers (PEF) and the Environmental Farmers Group (EFG) form a ground-breaking farmer-led nature recovery movement. Combined they now represent 687 farmers covering 354,436 hectares or 875,830 acres.

“With 72% of UK land in farming it is vital to engage and support the private land managers or Working Conservationists who run it. Nature reserves are important but not sufficient on their own. Bringing farmers on board and paying fairly for environmental goods they can supply through a blend of private and public funding is the only way the Government will be able to hit its legally binding targets for nature recovery alongside its food security goals.”

What Are the Benefits of Stud Welding for Businesses? https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/12/25/what-are-the-benefits-of-stud-welding-for-businesses/ Mon, 25 Dec 2023 09:09:24 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=17255 Stud welding is a popular welding technique that forms strong results manually or automatically. It’s used across various industries including the automotive, farming, and construction sectors. Before moving ahead, we would suggest you to study a welding course in case you’ve planning to join it from a long time but couldn’t make the final decision. Welding can actually be a rewarding career, in spite of the fact that school costs are relatively low for most welding schools and it is no lie when said it doesn’t cost much to become a welder, yet welders still make a good earning.

The versatile welding method, which involves joining two metal parts with the heat from an arc of electricity, is often favoured over other processes, such as spot welding and back welding. But why is stud welding considered more beneficial, and is it right for your business?

Convenience

Stud welding is a speedy process as it involves fewer steps, depending on the equipment you use, leaving you with more time to focus on other areas of the business and enhance productivity.

Taylor Studwelding, the UK’s leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of stud welding equipment, provide machinery that can weld up to 60 studs within 60 seconds, which is ideal for long-running, time-sensitive, or large projects.

Longevity

The technique creates long-lasting and reliable results by forming a weld between the stud and parent material that is even stronger than the original components. However, ensure you use resilient materials that are a suitable width and texture to endure the strength of the machine.

Stud welding doesn’t require punching or deburring holes into the metal sheet either, unlike back welding, which can weaken the material by causing leakages and corrosion.
Reduced costs

Stud welding costs less than other methods due to the fewer business hours required to complete the process. Automated stud welding machines enhance accuracy too, which minimises expensive manufacturing errors that can cause recalls.

On top of this, the durable finish of stud welding decreases the chance of unexpected maintenance fees arising.

Accessibility

When carrying out stud welding, the welder only needs access to one side of the parent material, whereas, with spot welding, they need access to both.

A lightweight stud welding machine fitted with wheels and handles makes transporting the equipment easier, which is especially useful if you’re working in hard-to-reach or awkward places.

Visually pleasing

The stud weld finish is seamless as it’s only visible from one side of the parent material. There is also minimal risk of damaging existing paintwork or marking the reverse side of the material during the process, which often occurs with other techniques.

These aesthetic perks are particularly beneficial for manufacturing decorative products such as badges, jewellery clasps, and homeware.

Flexibility

Stud welding is suitable for many metal types, including stainless steel, mild steel, copper, brass, and aluminium.

There are also different types of stud welding to choose from, including Capacitor-Discharge, Drawn Arc and Short Cycle stud welding, so you can find a technique that meets your business needs.

The many benefits of stud welding make it a highly efficient technique for businesses. The variety of machinery available allows you to choose an option that aligns with your priorities, whether that’s cost, time, or quality.

Farming & Agriculture: Four Types Of Theft Impacting Business Operations https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/10/27/farming-agriculture-four-types-of-theft-impacting-business-operations/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 10:14:51 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=111491 The agricultural sector forms the backbone of many economies, ensuring food security and livelihoods for a significant portion of the population. However, like any other sector, farming and agriculture are susceptible to various forms of theft, which pose a serious threat to the hard work and investment of farmers.

Understanding and addressing theft in this sector is not just about safeguarding assets; it’s about protecting the individuals and communities whose livelihoods depend on the land they till and the crops they grow. Through a closer examination, here are some ways in which business owners are being affected by theft.

Understanding The Scope Of Theft

The scope of theft in the farming and agricultural industry is broad and carries substantial financial and operational repercussions for businesses. Thieves often target various assets, each with its unique set of challenges when it comes to theft prevention. Machinery theft is a rising concern, with tractors, harvesters, and other expensive equipment being stolen or vandalised. Crop theft strikes at the heart of a farmer’s livelihood, with harvested produce being a target.

Fuel theft, often from agricultural storage tanks, affects not only the cost but the very operation of farm machinery. Lastly, livestock rustling, an age-old problem, has modern-day implications with thieves using sophisticated means to steal animals.

Understanding the distinct nature and impact of these theft types is the precursor to formulating effective deterrent strategies, ensuring the sustenance and growth of the agricultural sector.

Machinery & Equipment Theft

Farms heavily rely on various machinery and equipment to efficiently carry out daily operations. Tractors, ploughs, harvesters, and irrigation systems are indispensable assets that significantly ease the burden of manual labour. However, the indispensable nature of these assets also makes them prime targets for theft.

When stolen, not only is replacing these machines costly, but the downtime they cause can severely disrupt farming schedules, leading to potential crop losses. Thus, machinery and equipment theft poses a dual threat, impacting both the financial stability and operational continuity of agricultural enterprises.

Crop Theft

Crop theft is another concerning issue for farmers as it directly snatches away the fruits of their labour. From grains to fruits and vegetables, thieves often target high-value produce, leaving farmers with significant financial losses. The impact extends beyond the individual farmer to the entire community, affecting local markets and food supply chains.

Additionally, crop theft can discourage farmers, especially smallholders, from investing time and resources in the subsequent growing seasons, thereby threatening the sustainability and food security of the region.

Fuel Theft

Fuel theft is another critical issue plaguing the agricultural sector. Fuel is essential for powering machinery, making its storage a crucial aspect of farm management. Thieves often target agricultural storage tanks to syphon off fuel, which can halt farm operations and incur significant costs. Investing in secure storage solutions is vital for preventing such thefts.

When it comes down to using agricultural tanks for your business, you will want to consider which measures to put in place to reduce fuel theft on your site. Make sure that fuel tanks are in a safe location with secure access by implementing surveillance systems, locked gates, as well as having well-lit locations which are monitored regularly.

Ensuring that your fuel on-site is safe and secure not only curtails theft but also contributes to the smooth operation and sustainability of farming activities.

Livestock Rustling

Livestock rustling is a historical issue that continues to plague modern agriculture. The theft of animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats represents a significant loss for farmers. According to research carried out in 2021, £2.3 million worth of livestock was stolen from farms during 2020 showing the impact the issue is having on farms.

Beyond the financial loss, there’s a profound emotional toll as many farmers regard their livestock with a sense of stewardship. Modern rustlers have become more sophisticated, often using technology to evade detection.

Preventing livestock theft is crucial for maintaining the livelihoods of farmers and the economic vitality of rural communities. Efforts towards better identification methods and increased surveillance are key to deterring and addressing livestock rustling.

The Best storage tips for agriculture workers https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/05/23/the-best-storage-tips-for-agriculture-workers/ Tue, 23 May 2023 10:39:28 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=93210 Almost every business needs storage space for materials, stock, and equipment. For larger operations, this might mean entire properties dedicated to storing seasonal items whereas for smaller businesses this might just mean tools and consumables.

Whatever you need to run your business, you want to ensure that you are storing it appropriately. From corn to combine harvesters, improper storage can cause damage, so it’s important to know what is needed and ensure that you check the specifications of any storage solution you consider.

Farming storage

So much of farming involves having the things that you need on hand so that you can make the most of good weather and minimize the risks posed by bad weather. Of course, there are many different storage requirements depending on the types of farm, and these can include:

Vehicles and Machinery

While these are designed to survive some degree of exposure to the weather, farm machinery lasts the longest if it has some protection from the worst of the weather. There are plenty of different models to choose from to suit your needs, such as a Quonset hut barn designed to be used in areas that regularly experience heavy snow.

It’s also important to consider where everything will be kept when it’s not in use – expensive equipment needs to be stored properly to prevent damage. Secure storage is also important for high-value items that could be targeted by thieves.

Farm consumables

From hay and straw to food and medicine, pastoral farming requires a lot of storage space just for the basics that the animals need to keep them healthy. The space needed by the animals themselves also contributes to the overall footprint of the farm with specially designed barns and other enclosures that make caring for the animals much easier.

In arable farms, storage is required for seeds and other plants, as well as soil improvers, irrigation systems, and harvesting equipment. Having these items on hand makes it easy to take advantage of good conditions to maximize the potential of each crop.

Produce

Many farms have self-sustaining elements and mixed farms may use the straw from their crops as bedding for animals or as an addition to the soil. Others may grow food items for their animal which need to be stored correctly to maximize the lifespan of the harvest.

For farms that need to store items that are going to be commercially packaged off-site, it is important to ensure that optimum conditions are provided to minimize spoilage and retain as much nutritional benefit as possible. There are safety and hygiene standards associated with all products and rigorous standards for the equipment used to prepare it and the environment in which it’s stored.

For specialist farms

While there are plenty of big farms using lots of equipment and space, there are also plenty of smaller operations that have special storage requirements. From grow rooms in which to nurture more delicate crops to custom-built whiskey stills, getting your storage right can be a big part of your business.

From all-in-one workspaces and storage areas to purpose-built storage facilities, farms rely on storing things safely and securely.

Regulatory requirements

Depending on the items being stored, there may be regulatory requirements. This is true for hazardous materials including some pesticides and herbicides, as well as for items that are set to be consumed by the general public.

These should be at the forefront of any storage decisions and it’s important to ensure that any changes to your storage arrangements are up to code. The results of not following code can be detrimental to the business, either as a whole of financially. It is not a risk worth taking.

Outbuildings, silos, stables, barns, and containers can all be used to store farming essentials, but there are some other things to consider.

 • Typical weather conditions
 • Frequency of use
 • Temperature conditions
 • Humidity
 • Ventilation
 • Access requirements

From off-the-shelf solutions to common storage problems to custom-built storage for specialists, getting it right can make a huge difference to a farm’s bottom line. Being in the agricultural business is hard enough due to the changes in temperature and weather patterns. It is best not to add any further implications like poor storage become a negative factor.

Mushroom Farm Equipment – Top Features to Take Into Account When Making a Purchase https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/01/03/mushroom-farm-equipment-top-features-to-take-into-account-when-making-a-purchase/ Tue, 03 Jan 2023 22:42:46 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=75801 There are a lot of types and models of mushroom farming equipment to choose from, but not all of them will serve the farm equally well. They may offer different features that will greatly affect their usefulness, longevity and so on.

So, what features should be first and foremost taken into consideration when choosing mushroom farm’s equipment? Here’s some of the most important ones!

Mushroom picking lorry

What features should a good mushroom picking lorry have? Ones related to automation immediately come to mind. For example, automated, remote movement of the platform (up and down as well as left and right), which will save pickers’ time and strength. Automated stoppage system that will pause the movement in the event of detecting an obstacle in the trolley’s way (an object or a person) is also important.

Optimal battery capacity is another crucial factor to look out for. It will allow the pickers to complete a shift without having to pause for charging (which doesn’t require supervision, as the battery will automatically stop charging when it’s sufficiently replenished).

While aforementioned electrical features are important, it’s worth noting that there are also some non-electrical ones that characterize high-quality trolleys. They include, but are not limited to, a non-slip working platform, doors that open inwards (which prevents working without closing them), ergonomic, stable seat and hand and arm protection.

Scales for mushrooms

Optimally, weighting mushrooms in a mushroom growing farm should be fast and precise. Good mushroom scales not only meet these requirements, but also are easy to use and equipped with large, high-visibility screens.

Despite the harsh conditions on mushroom growing farms, they can serve the company for a long time due to their waterproofness and resistance to mechanical damage (scratching with a knife, for example).

Mushroom knives

Knives might not be the most technically advanced or biggest pieces of equipment present in mushroom growing farms, but they fulfill an important role. That’s why it’s best not to choose the cheapest ones, especially considering that high quality ones are only slightly more expensive.

Low-quality knives can have weak handles that will easily get damaged and blades that will quickly dull, affecting the efficiency of work. They will have to be replaced quite often, increasing the farm’s overall costs. In contrast, good quality knives have ergonomic, solid handles and durable blades.

As demonstrated, modern mushroom farm equipment is jam-packed with important features that have a big impact on the farm’s overall profitability. It’s worth learning about them and taking them into consideration when making a purchase decision, in order to reduce costs, raise picking efficiency and make workers’ lives easier. High-quality equipment that has all those features and more can be purchased from a trusted supplier, such as GROWTIME.
