The event brought together workers, retirees, and young people from across the country to call for a fairer, more democratic Italy built on the dignity of work and social justice.

CGIL leaders described the march as a united stand for democracy, employment rights, and equality, highlighting the need for policies that strengthen workers’ protections and civic participation.

The demonstration marked one of the largest union gatherings in Italy in recent years, underscoring widespread public concern over economic inequality and democratic accountability.

From the stage, CGIL General Secretary Maurizio Landini highlighted the union’s role as a force for representation and social cohesion, stressing the urgent need for policies that put jobs, wages, and safety back at the center. Alongside him, Luc Triangle, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), brought the voice of the global labor movement, emphasizing that the defense of rights and workplace democracy knows no borders.

At the core of the mobilization were key demands: the renewal of collective agreements, the fight against precarious work, greater investment in public health and education, and a fairer tax reform. The CGIL also expressed concern over Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s 2026 budgetary measures, warning that they could deepen inequality and cut funding for welfare and culture.

“Democracy at Work” was a day of participation and proposals — for an Italy that truly belongs to everyone.

When Timing & Medical Training Aligned for Nick Muzin https://www.newsanyway.com/2025/05/21/when-timing-medical-training-aligned-for-nick-muzin/ Wed, 21 May 2025 08:23:54 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=140006 One moment you’re snacking on popcorn at the Capitol Hill Club, the next you’re fighting for breath. That’s what happened to Texas Congressman Ted Poe in 2013. The situation might’ve ended in tragedy except for a rare coincidence – standing nearby was Nick Muzin, perhaps the only congressional staffer in the room with an MD after his name.

Nobody expects their congressional staffer to save their life between policy meetings. Yet Muzin’s unusual dual identity – doctor turned political operative – created a moment where medical training and political career collided. What might seem like a random anecdote actually reveals something deeper about Muzin’s peculiar career advantage: while other political staffers brought law degrees or campaign experience to Washington, he carried a stethoscope in his metaphorical back pocket.

You might know Nick Muzin as the guy who helped propel Tim Scott from local politics to the Senate, or maybe as Ted Cruz’s strategist during his 2016 presidential run. Perhaps you’ve heard about his firm Stonington Global representing countries and corporations with complex needs. What’s gotten less attention? The way his medical degree—something most politicos don’t bother acquiring—repeatedly positioned him to step into roles nobody else around him could handle.

When Med School Meets Washington

Growing up in Toronto, Nick Muzin had parents who drilled education into him like it was a religion. He ended up at Albert Einstein College of Medicine on a full ride—making his father’s dream come true. Most of his classmates had their eyes locked on specialties, fellowships, and practices. Not Muzin. His mind kept wandering to places medical students rarely go.

“I’ve always been interested in politics and in law, and I went to medical school interested in medicine,” Muzin explained. “Then I started thinking about public policy and what you could do as a doctor, and how you can influence public policy and medical administration.”

McCain’s 2008 presidential run revealed a practical application for Muzin’s unusual skillset. Voters worried about McCain’s age—he would have been among the oldest presidents ever inaugurated. Add to that his melanoma history and lingering health issues from his Vietnam POW experience, and health questions became a significant campaign vulnerability.

McCain needed someone who understood both medicine and politics—a rare combination. Trevor Potter, the campaign’s general counsel, lit up when hearing about Muzin’s credentials. “Upon learning of my dual qualifications in medicine and law, he indicated that my medical expertise would be particularly valuable for a specific role he had in mind,” Muzin recalled.

The campaign named Muzin senior medical advisor, handing him boxes of McCain’s medical history dating back to his POW release. Scanning through psychiatric evaluations, melanoma treatment records, and decades of medical data required actual medical training—not something your average campaign spokesperson could fake. Someone had to translate doctor-speak into voter-friendly language while maintaining medical credibility.

“I spent months reviewing all that, looking into all the issues, understanding it really well, and then, putting together summary documents and formatting it for the press,” Muzin noted. McCain’s team strategically scheduled their medical records release right before Memorial Day weekend 2008—minimizing media overanalysis while technically fulfilling transparency obligations. Classic political timing paired with genuine medical expertise.

Political Diagnosis and Treatment

Medical school rewires your brain. Years spent learning to collect symptoms, analyze lab values, develop differential diagnoses, and create treatment plans permanently changes how you approach problems. What happens when you take that thinking pattern and drop it into a political campaign? Something quite different from how traditional political operatives function.

Running Tim Scott’s 2010 congressional campaign showed how medical diagnostic patterns work in politics. Scott wasn’t exactly favored against South Carolina political royalty—Paul Thurmond (Senator Strom Thurmond’s son) and Carroll Campbell III (former governor’s son) carried dynastic advantages. Their family names alone opened doors throughout the state.

Medical training teaches methodical analysis rather than gut instinct. Muzin seemed to approach Scott’s campaign like a complex case presentation—cataloging strengths (Scott’s local name recognition from years on Charleston County Council, his natural speaking ability, deep policy understanding).

Scott demolished both primary and general election opponents, making history as the first Black Republican elected from the South since Reconstruction. Muzin followed him to Washington as chief of staff. Healthcare legislation dominated Congress during those years, with the Affordable Care Act becoming law. Having an actual physician helping craft your healthcare positions provided Scott distinct advantages in those complex debates.

Political operatives typically excel at messaging, optics, and vote counting—not understanding how bundled payments affect hospital operations or how insurance networks impact patient outcomes. Muzin could read proposed healthcare legislation and actually grasp clinical implications. When Republicans drafted Affordable Care Act alternatives, few congressional offices contained someone who understood both medical delivery systems and legislative procedure.

Making House Calls on K Street

Running a medical practice trains you to juggle research journals, patient calls, insurance nightmares, and actual treatment—all while the clock ticks relentlessly. Nothing goes according to schedule. Everything requires rapid prioritization. Sound familiar to anyone who’s worked in politics?

When Nick Muzin launched Stonington Global after Cruz’s 2016 campaign, he structured it unlike conventional lobbying shops. Most K Street firms lock clients into six-month or year-long retainers regardless of results. Muzin went rogue, offering month-to-month arrangements that looked suspiciously like how doctors handle their ongoing patient relationships—you keep coming back because you’re getting better, not because you signed a contract.

“We never ask for more than one month retainer,” Muzin explained. “Every other firm wants six months or a year. We go month-to-month.”

That arrangement echoes how ethical doctors approach patient relationships—proving their value continuously rather than trapping clients in lengthy commitments. Monthly renewals require ongoing results, showing remarkable confidence in what they deliver.

“If after a month they see no progress, we would rather part ways than continue billing them,” Muzin said. “Our clients understand our rates rank among the highest in Washington, but they know they can walk away any month. Thankfully, many stay with us for years.”

Stonington’s client roster reveals Muzin’s medical fingerprints. “Since the pandemic, we’ve done a lot of health care in the United States,” Muzin noted. “We’ve represented pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and nursing homes.”

Healthcare organizations appreciate someone who understands clinical realities, not merely regulatory language. When hospitals face Medicare reimbursement cuts or pharmaceutical companies navigate FDA approval processes, Muzin offers something ordinary lobbyists can’t: genuine comprehension of medical systems from the inside.

Telangana 24 Year Old Digital Influencer Lady in Politics https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/11/26/telangana-24-year-old-digital-influencer-lady-in-politics/ Sun, 26 Nov 2023 16:26:53 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=124230

Hyderabad, Telangana: In a significant move that blends social media influence with political aspirations, 24 year old Sirisha, a well-known figure among the youth of Telangana, has stepped into the political battleground. Announcing her decision to contest as an MLA for the Kolhapur constituency in Mahbubnagar district, Sirisha filed her nomination this Wednesday, marking a new chapter in her diverse career.

Sirisha, after completing her degree, initially ventured into animal husbandry, borrowing money from her mother to buy buffaloes. However, her journey took a turn when she embraced the role of a content creator. Known for her engaging social media presence, particularly her viral videos with the catchphrase ‘Hi friends, I am your barrelakkani’, Sirisha has garnered a substantial following.

In a statement to the media, Sirisha expressed her commitment to addressing the challenges faced by students and the unemployed. “I nominated as an unemployed Telangana woman. I may not be able to campaign in this election. Money may not be distributed. But what good are the voters? What is bad? It should be thought. I hope I will have your support,” she remarked, highlighting her approach to politics as one driven by thoughtfulness and a desire to make a tangible difference.

Sirisha’s entry into politics is not just a personal milestone but also signifies a growing trend where individuals from diverse backgrounds, including social media, are seeking to impact traditional political landscapes at just 24 years of age. Her campaign, though unconventional in its reliance on social media and personal appeal rather than traditional political machinery, reflects a new era in Indian politics where the lines between digital influence and political power are increasingly blurring. Growing Awareness of Mould Issues in the UK Encourages Homeowners and Tenants to Take Action. https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/04/21/growing-awareness-of-mould-issues-in-the-uk-encourages-homeowners-and-tenants-to-take-action/ Fri, 21 Apr 2023 14:53:05 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=91619 A recent survey conducted by mould specialist company, Mould Removal London, reveals worrying statistics about the prevalence of mould in UK properties. The issue is a growing concern among residents in London and beyond, with over 62.38% of respondents reporting a mould issue in their property.

The survey shows that the problem is widespread across London, with the highest percentage of mould issues reported in South London (78.13%), followed by West London (63.64%), East London (59.38%), and North London (46.15%). Mould affects both tenants and homeowners, with 51.06% of tenants and 74.07% of homeowners experiencing mould issues.

The bathroom (68.35%) and bedroom (44.3%) are identified as the most common places for mould presence, and it is heartening to note that 87.24% of respondents are aware of the health risks associated with mould. In the past five years, 42.11% of respondents who do not currently have a mould issue have experienced one.

Mould is also prevalent in garden rooms, highlighting the importance of choosing the best garden room to avoid such issues. As more people consider adding garden rooms to their properties, understanding the risks of mould and taking preventive measures can help maintain a healthy and safe environment.

As awareness grows, 72.15% of respondents have taken steps to address the issue. Respondents who have had mould for more than a year are most likely to call a professional (31.25%). Dehumidifiers are a popular solution, with 51.49% of respondents having one in their home. Additionally, 80.20% of respondents have a good source of ventilation, and 50.5% have an air purifier in their home.

The UK Association of Mould Experts states, “Mould is not only an unsightly problem, but it can also lead to severe health issues if left unaddressed. It is essential for homeowners and tenants to take preventive measures and promptly tackle any mould issues they encounter in their properties, including garden rooms.”

To prevent mould from coming back, there are several methods homeowners and tenants can adopt. Ensuring good ventilation, using dehumidifiers and air purifiers, and regularly cleaning damp areas are crucial steps. Adding plants to the home can also be helpful, as seen in the 76.24% of respondents with plants in their homes. Another effective solution is to replaster walls using a local plastering service, which can help create a more mould-resistant surface.

With mould affecting the health and wellbeing of a significant portion of the population, it is crucial for individuals to take preventive measures and promptly address any issues that arise. As the awareness of mould problems increases in the UK, it is hoped that more people will take action to create healthier living environments for themselves and their families.

Vision Set Out by Labour for Social Mobility to UK Business Leaders https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/03/29/vision-set-out-by-labour-for-social-mobility-to-uk-business-leaders/ Wed, 29 Mar 2023 14:33:10 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=81759
Anneliese Dodds shared Labour’s determination to put equality and social mobility at the heart of its plans to build a better Britain while addressing a diverse audience of leaders spanning across the private, public, and third sectors during the yearly Social Mobility Business Seminar held in London.

Anneliese Dodds, Labour Party Chair and Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, set out Labour’s vision for social mobility at the Social Mobility Business Seminar in London on 29 March 2023.

The Social Mobility Business Seminar, an annual event organized by the charity Making The Leap, serves as a platform for professionals from diverse sectors, such as professional services, finance, law, retail, media, hospitality, government, and the third sector.

During her keynote speech, Anneliese Dodds outlined how Labour’s five missions, announced recently by Keir Starmer, will help to support social mobility, through economic growth and by breaking down barriers for people at every stage of their lives. Drawing on her personal experience of confronting the “soft bigotry of low expectations,” she emphasized her unwavering commitment to eradicating this problem for women and girls across Britain.

She then proceeded to detail Labour’s strategy to tackle the inequalities holding people back, such as the lack of accessible childcare that prevents women from pursuing their “dream job”, Black children being held back by discrimination, and disabled people unable to work because of a lack of reasonable adjustments.

In addition to Dodds’ speech, business leaders shared their experiences of advancing social mobility, and why improving socio-economic diversity, equity and inclusion must be a priority for employers across the UK. Speakers included Bina Mehta (Chair, KPMG UK), Michael Turner (CEO, Man Solutions), and Steven Cooper CBE (CEO, Aldermore Group and former Joint Chair of the Social Mobility Commission).

The Social Mobility Business Seminar saw this year’s launch of two further annual events organised by Making The Leap. The UK Social Mobility Awards (SOMOs) is a nationwide leadership initiative which recognises and celebrates employers and educators working to improve social mobility. A panel of distinguished individuals from the private and public sectors, serving as an independent judging committee, will select the winners across 12 categories. The upcoming Social Mobility Day, scheduled for 15 June 2023, presents a valuable occasion to initiate broader discussions on social mobility and foster action to enhance the prospects of individuals from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds.

Anneliese Dodds stated:

“The Social Mobility Business Seminar is a fantastic event, bringing together the public, private and third sectors to collaborate and share best practice on how to advance social mobility. It was an honour to address the seminar.

“Social mobility to me means breaking down the barriers that hold too many people back and prevent us from utilising the talents of everyone in our country. Unleashing those talents is good for individuals, good for business and good for Britain.

“Social mobility is at the heart of Labour’s missions to deliver economic growth all across the UK and to break down barriers standing in the way of opportunity.”

Tunde Banjoko OBE, CEO of Making The Leap and founder of the UK Social Mobility Awards, stated:

“Every year, the Social Mobility Business Seminar provides an opportunity for employers and educators to learn why and how they can advance social mobility in the UK.

“At Making The Leap, our vision is for every UK employer and educator to have a social mobility plan which guides meaningful action to achieve socio-economic diversity, equity and inclusion.

“Any government plays a crucial role in advancing social mobility, whether by supporting businesses or through wider policy interventions, and so we are delighted to hear from the Labour Party and a range of business leaders on their social mobility vision today”.

Viceroy Research – Jonathan Lourie, Hidden Connections & Dubious History https://www.newsanyway.com/2023/03/24/viceroy-research-jonathan-lourie-hidden-connections-dubious-history/ Fri, 24 Mar 2023 18:58:06 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=81419 Jonathan Lourie is the founder and CIO at Cheyne Capital, a London-based alternative asset manager.  The firm launched its first fund in 2000 and today specializes in real estate debt, social property impact, corporate credit, convertible bonds, event-driven investing, and equities.

Cheyne’s funds are mainly from institutional investors. Despite that fact, Cheyne are hot on the heels of a number of cases on the interpretation of securitisation documents.

Viceroy Research & Fraser Perring

On the other side of the Thames, we can find Viceroy Research managed by Fraser Perring.

Viceroy Research LLC was founded in 2016 by Perring together with Australian partners Aiden Lau and Gabriel Bernarde and registered in Delaware, U.S.. Viceroy claims to be an international investigative financial research group.

Recently, Viceroy has been shameful for the short position it took with Home REIT PLC, and is blamed for fraud, market manipulation & insider trading.

Perring disclosed his short position on Home REIT on November 22, 2022, while on 23rd of November, Viceroy Research published its first negative report about Home REIT followed by the second report on 30th of November. On February 22nd 2023, Perring declared he might take over Home REIT after its downfall.

Zatarra Leaks

Zatarra Research was founded by Fraser Perring, in 2020 a document describing Wirecard affair named “Zatarra Leaks” was published. The document alleges that Zatarra Research was backed by Brett and Eli, two men with wealthy families and backers in the UK and Israel. According to the publication Zatarra Research intended to make profits through stock market manipulations. Zatarra Research’s trade plan was coordinated with media publications of negative reports by the group.

Capitec Entanglement

Viceroy is well known for getting into trouble, back in 2018 Viceroy Research published negative reports regarding Capitec, a South African bank. Viceroy Research alleged that Captiec was making unsecured loans mainly to low and middle-income households and concealing losses by refinancing loans that customers were unable to repay. In 2021 the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) imposed an administrative penalty of 50 million Rands (around 3.7 million dollars at the time) on Viceroy Research.  According to the FSCA, in January 2018 Viceroy Research published false, misleading, or deceptive statements, promises, or forecasts regarding material facts about Capitec, which they ought reasonably to have known were not true.

Sources of Funds

Fraser Perring is not a wealthy individual that can financially backup his investments, and hence there is always someone that is providing the financial backup. UK Sources allege that the current financial backup to Viceroy is provided by no other than Jonathan Lourie, from Cheyne Capital.

Allegedly, Jonathan is not only the financial backer of Viceroy, he is also tipping Viceroy on the researched companies.

Cheyne has a predominantly institutional investor base, the alleged tips and financial backup to Viceroy by Jonathan, causing losses to the same institutional investors from Viceroy’s shorts.

Spanish-Saudi Criminal Plot

Cheyne’s name was tied to a Spanish-Saudi criminal plot around 2007, as Cheyne co-managed a Spanish-Saudi Infrastructure Fund named “Fondo de Infraestructuras Hispano-Saud”.  The fund was announced in April 2006 in Riyadh during an official visit by the Spanish monarch, Juan Carlos I.  The fund’s main project was the construction of the AVE train linking Medina to Mecca. The total value of the project was 9.4 billion dollars.

A year after the creation of the fund, the Saudi Ministry of Finance transferred $100 million to an account belonging to the Panamanian foundation Lucum, held at Swiss bank Mirabaud & Cie and whose main beneficiary was Juan Carlos I. As a result, Juan Carlos I was investigated by Spanish authorities under the suspicion for multiple offenses, including bribery, influence peddling, and tax evasion.

Tax Settlement with British Authorities

According to the New York Times, in 2007, Cheyne Finance, a subsidiary of Cheyne Capital Management, went into bankruptcy and reached a settlement with British authorities regarding tax debts. According to the agreement, Cheyne was obligated to pay 3.2 million pounds ($6.7 million) to HM Revenue & Customs.

Will history repeat itself?

Massive Banner of Putin Unfurled at Red Bull HQ https://www.newsanyway.com/2022/11/25/massive-banner-of-putin-unfurled-at-red-bull-hq/ Fri, 25 Nov 2022 12:32:29 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=71208 Red Bull faced further criticism for its relationship with Russia this week, as campaigners unfurled a massive banner outside their HQ near Salzburg.

The banner read ‘RED BULL GIVES PUTIN WINGS’ and relates to the energy drinks decision to continue selling its product in Russia. The 400m2 also shows a depiction of Putin riding the company’s bull logo.

In a statement following the incident, Ukraine Solidarity Project (USP) took credit for the protest.

It read: “The protest was organised by the Ukraine Solidarity Project (USP) – a network of European and Ukrainian activists exposing global brands for regressive policies on Putin’s Russia. Companies that continue to trade in Russia pay taxes to the Kremlin and threaten global solidarity in the face of Putin’s aggression”.

Earlier this month, Red Bull also faced protests at their Formula 1 HQ in the UK. In that instance, a message from 2022 Nobel Peace Prize winner Oleksandra Matviichuk was projected across the building.

The statement from Ukraine Solidarity Project also discussed that it hopes these protests will push the brand to reconsider its activity in Russia.

The statement added: “It really matters that Red Bull is still on sale in Russia. It’s one of the world’s biggest brands and its decision to stick with Putin’s Russia is highly significant.

“Companies that sell their products there are paying taxes to the Kremlin and signaling that they’re comfortable with the illegal invasion of Ukraine. They need to pull out. As things stand, Red Bull gives Putin wings.”

As things stand, Red Bull has suspended all marketing activities and new investments in Russia and complies with all EU and US sanctions. However, the product remains on sale in the country.

Adam Milstein on the Importance of the US-Israel Relationship https://www.newsanyway.com/2022/10/27/adam-milstein-on-the-importance-of-the-us-israel-relationship/ Thu, 27 Oct 2022 10:34:52 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=67838 The U.S.-Israel alliance was forged when the state of Israel was formally recognized by President Truman in May of 1948. Both countries were built on founding principles of democracy, freedom, and the right to preserve political autonomy in the face of aggression from outside forces. That’s why, according to Israeli American businessman and philanthropist Adam Milstein it’s not surprising the connection between the two like-minded nations was, and remains, so powerful.

What Makes the U.S.-Israel alliance Special?

“People established both America and Israel as a sanctuary and a melting pot for people in search of religious freedom and tolerance,”  In May 2018, Adam Milstein wrote in a Jerusalem Post editorial commemorating Israel’s 70th anniversary. “Both were founded on the Western values of democracy, Judeo-Christian values, free speech, and freedom of the press. The American dream is much like the Zionist dream, rooted in the principle that everyone should have the right to self-determination and the opportunity to achieve success through hard work and determination.”

America was the first nation to officially recognize the fledgling state of Israel, and in 2017, it was also the first country to relocate its embassy to Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish state. “Israel is a great partner to the United States, and Israel has no greater friend than the United States. Americans and Israelis are united by our shared commitment to democracy, economic prosperity, and regional security. The unbreakable bond between our two countries has never been stronger,” the U.S. State Department recently proclaimed.

Jerusalem U.S.-Israel Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration

In furtherance of the U.S. and Israel’s ongoing commitment to promote these mutual principals, on July 14, 2022, the historic Jerusalem U.S.-Israel Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration was signed into effect by U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid, during Biden’s visit to Israel.

The declaration states, in part, that: “The United States and Israel reaffirm the unbreakable bonds between our two countries and the enduring commitment of the United States to Israel’s security. Our countries further reaffirm that the strategic U.S.-Israel partnership is based on a bedrock of shared values, shared interests, and true friendship…

“[We] will continue to work together to combat all efforts to boycott or delegitimize Israel, to deny its right to self-defense or to unfairly single it out in any forum.”

Long before the Jerusalem U.S.-Israel Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration came to be, Adam Milstein was conscious of the rising movement of anti-Jewish sentiment disguised as anti-Israel criticism that swept America. In response to the growing antisemitism, Adam Milstein works tirelessly, through his activism and charitable outreach, to raise awareness for the importance of a strong U.S.-Israel alliance for both Israelis and Americans.

Israel’s Lifesaving Iron Dome Defense System

In the Middle East, military conflict is as much a part of the present as the past. The lines between defense and offense are often obscured by rhetoric. But even in battles, there are valuable lessons to be learned and applied as the forces involved work toward a viable and peaceful resolution.

“Both the U.S. and Israel have withstood existential threats through courage and patriotism of their people,” Milstein said. Those threats, in turn, have led to necessary caution. However, Adam Milstein asserts the enforcement of such vigilance when governed by deep-seated American and Israeli core values, rather than escalating violence, has served primarily to safeguard the region’s population, thus saving lives — regardless of faith, nationality, or ethnicity.

One of this vigilance’s most impressive real-world applications is manifested in Israel’s cutting-edge Iron Dome defense system. Utilizing state-of-the-art anti-missile technology developed in Israel with considerable financial backing from the American government ($1.6 billion from 2011 to 2021, with another $1 billion approved by the U.S. Congress in 2022), the Iron Dome intercepts and eliminates short-range rocket and artillery fire aimed at civilian targets. Per the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), since its first deployment in 2011, the all-weather, mobile defense system has gained increasing accuracy and now achieves a 90% rate of effectiveness.

“[The Iron Dome gives] Israel a viable option to defend itself and shifts its focus from a strategy of preemptive offensives against terrorists who hide among tightly packed civilian areas to a defense system that intercepts real and present danger,” explained an Aug. 8, 2022 article in AJC/Global Voice. “It also reduces the need for ground operations in and around the civilian areas that terrorists use for launching missiles and rockets at Israeli civilians.”

Iron Dome technology isn’t limited to the defense of Israel, however. “It’s not widely understood, but the United States’ generous funding of Israeli technology, including missile defense, has become a wise investment in the safety of its citizens,” explained Yinam Cohen, consul general of Israel to the Midwest, in the Sept. 9, 2022, issue of The Detroit Jewish News.

After a joint live-fire trial conducted in New Mexico by teams from the U.S. Army and the Israeli Missile Defense Organization was deemed a resounding success, two Iron Dome systems were purchased by the U.S. Army, the first of which was deployed to Guam in late 2021.

The Future of Israel-U.S. Alliance

While the importance of mutual American and Israeli interests in technology (not limited to the military) and economic development cannot be downplayed, Milstein believes the vital role the two nations play in brokering a long-term, sustainable peace in the Middle East will ultimately determine the global future for all.

The U.S. played an integral part in the Abraham Accords, helping  establish Israel as a key regional player and a partner for peace with neighboring countries that share its goal of regional security and stability such as Bahrain, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, and Sudan.

At the close of the historic Jerusalem U.S.-Israel Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration, American and Israeli leaders pledged not only to carry out the pact’s stated initiatives of continued reciprocal support, but affirmed “countless other joint endeavors, undertaken between their peoples at every level of government and civil society demonstrate that the U.S.-Israel strategic partnership is indispensable and makes an outsized contribution not only to the good of American and Israeli citizens but also to the good of the Middle East and of the world.”

Truss and Her Tax Rate U-Turn – What You Need to Know https://www.newsanyway.com/2022/10/26/truss-and-her-tax-rate-u-turn-what-you-need-to-know/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 10:58:33 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=67703 It has been a turbulent time for embattled Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose recent approval rating of -47 is worse than Boris Johnson’s at the height of ‘Party Gate’ and Theresa May’s during the final days of her ill-feted reign.

At the heart of this issue is Truss’s controversial economic policy, which featured sweeping and untargeted tax cuts while also scrapping the 45p tax rate for the UK’s highest earners.

However, Truss and her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng have since U-turned on the latter policy, but why is this the case and will it be enough to safeguard the PM’s immediate future?

The Truth About the 45p Tax Rate

There are four primary tax bands in the UK, the highest of which applies a levy of 45% to anyone who earns in excess of £150,000 every year.

Scrapping the “45p” rate, so-called because it takes £0.45 for every £1 earned by those who meet the earnings criteria, was a key component of Truss’s economic policy, which she claimed would drive growth by reducing the tax burden on the UK’s wealthiest citizens.

We’ll touch more on the efficacy of this particular policy a little later in the piece, but it would have applied to more than 600,000 UK workers who currently earn more than £150,000 per annum.

Scrapping the band would have delivered an average yearly tax cut of £10,000, creating a significant break for a handful of fortunate earners nationwide.

The U-Turn – Why Has Truss Abandoned the 45p Rate Scrap?

Broadly speaking, Truss’s economic plans represent a repackaged version of ‘Reaganomics’, which espoused trickledown economic theories and focused on sweeping tax cuts, reduced social spending and further deregulation of domestic free markets.

The issue with trickledown policies of this type is that they’re demonstrably ineffective, particularly in free market economies where there are no real mechanisms to help ensure that tax breaks for the rich translate into benefits for all.

As a result, the financial markets reacted with horror to Truss’s plans when they were announced, as the pound plunged to record lows against the dollar, CFD traders hedged against the GBP and the Bank of England (BoE) was forced to pump billions of pounds into failing bonds and pension markets.

Even senior members of Truss’s own party were quick to round on the new Tory leader, fearing a backlash at the polls as Labour opened up an unprecedented 25-point lead over their rivals at the beginning of October.

These facts, coupled with concerns over the rising base rate of interest and an increasingly unstable housing market, has forced Truss to reconsider he plans and particularly the optics of the 45p tax rate removal.

As a result, Kwasi Kwarteng announced the decision to reverse the 45p tax rate in an early morning tweet, claiming that “we get it and we have listened” before reaffirming the decision in a formal speech.

The Last Word

Undoubtedly, this has been a disastrous start for Liz Truss, who could well face herself the subject of a leadership challenge as Labour surge ahead in the polls.

Her credibility is certainly in pieces, after initially agreeing to a bizarrely vague and untargeted set of economic policies and then failing to have the courage of her own convictions as the pressure poured on.

What’s more, the decision to scrap the 45p tax rate could be the first of many Tory U-turns, meaning that further battles will lie ahead for the new PM.
