The event brought together workers, retirees, and young people from across the country to call for a fairer, more democratic Italy built on the dignity of work and social justice.

CGIL leaders described the march as a united stand for democracy, employment rights, and equality, highlighting the need for policies that strengthen workers’ protections and civic participation.

The demonstration marked one of the largest union gatherings in Italy in recent years, underscoring widespread public concern over economic inequality and democratic accountability.

From the stage, CGIL General Secretary Maurizio Landini highlighted the union’s role as a force for representation and social cohesion, stressing the urgent need for policies that put jobs, wages, and safety back at the center. Alongside him, Luc Triangle, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), brought the voice of the global labor movement, emphasizing that the defense of rights and workplace democracy knows no borders.

At the core of the mobilization were key demands: the renewal of collective agreements, the fight against precarious work, greater investment in public health and education, and a fairer tax reform. The CGIL also expressed concern over Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s 2026 budgetary measures, warning that they could deepen inequality and cut funding for welfare and culture.

“Democracy at Work” was a day of participation and proposals — for an Italy that truly belongs to everyone.

Why Are Background Checks Important for Employers? https://www.newsanyway.com/2025/07/02/why-are-background-checks-important-for-employers/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 06:47:50 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=140377 In today’s competitive job market, ensuring that new hires are both qualified and trustworthy is more important than ever. Background checks are an essential tool in the hiring process, enabling employers to verify credentials, assess risk, and protect their business from potential threats.

According to Jagriti Patwari, Compliance Manager at Eurocom CI, “A good background check isn’t just about uncovering red flags, it’s about building confidence in your hiring decisions.”

Understanding the Role of Background Checks

A background check typically includes criminal record screening, employment history, identity verification, and right-to-work checks.

For roles in sensitive sectors like education, healthcare, finance, and government contracts, the checks may also include enhanced criminal record searches such as DBS checks, or industry-specific verifications.

Background checks aren’t just about digging into someone’s past, they’re about making informed decisions that can save time, money, and protect your brand reputation.

Key Reasons Background Checks Matter for Employers

1. Workplace Safety and Security

A thorough background check can identify candidates with violent criminal records or a history of misconduct, helping to prevent harm to other staff, customers, or clients. Employers have a duty of care to provide a safe working environment.

2. Hiring the Right Fit

Verifying employment history, references, and professional credentials ensures that applicants have the experience and qualifications they claim. This step is crucial for building a competent and honest workforce.

3. Compliance with Regulations

Many sectors are required by law to perform background checks, especially when working with children, vulnerable adults, or sensitive data. Failing to comply can result in heavy fines and reputational damage.

4. Minimising Risk and Fraud

Fraudulent job applications and identity theft are growing issues in the digital age. By vetting candidates thoroughly, businesses can reduce the risk of hiring someone who might commit fraud or damage the organisation’s finances or trustworthiness.

5. Improved Retention and Trust

Employees who pass a rigorous vetting process tend to stay longer and perform better, as they’re typically a good match for the role and culture. Conducting background checks also reassures other employees that the business values integrity and professionalism.

Building a Culture of Due Diligence

Background checks are not a one-size-fits-all solution. Customising the level of scrutiny based on the role, industry, and regulatory requirements is critical. Employers should also make sure they are transparent with candidates about the process and comply with GDPR and employment laws.

Final Thought: A thorough background check process isn’t just good practice, it’s a smart investment in your organisation’s future.

Youth Voice Census 2024 Reveals Impact of Anxiety, Discrimination, and Economic Strain on Young People’s Futures https://www.newsanyway.com/2024/09/26/youth-voice-census-2024-reveals-impact-of-anxiety-discrimination-and-economic-strain-on-young-peoples-futures/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=137419 The 2024 Youth Voice Census has shed light on the significant influence of anxiety, discrimination, and financial pressures on the future prospects of young people in the UK.

This year’s Youth Voice Census, completed by over 5,000 young people aged 11-30, offers an in-depth look into how the UK’s youth view their lives, education, and work experiences.

The report highlights a growing mental health crisis, with anxiety reaching unprecedented levels. A staggering 60% of young people report struggling with anxiety. Concerns about falling behind in skills and opportunities are intensifying the mental health challenge, with 40% of respondents citing anxiety as a major barrier to securing employment.

Alarmingly, bullying, discrimination, and harassment remain widespread, with 47% of those in education and 17% of young workers reporting direct experiences of these issues. More than 35% of young people named discrimination as one of the top issues facing the country. Those with additional needs are experiencing particularly severe levels of discrimination and exclusion.

Financial concerns are also weighing heavily on young people’s choices around education, training, and employment. One in ten have missed out on education due to financial difficulties, and 72% of university students see money-related issues as a primary cause of stress.

A sense of isolation is further compounded by limited access to enrichment and extracurricular activities. The report finds that the greatest inequalities are experienced by Black, African, Black British or Caribbean respondents, care-experienced young people, those with additional needs, and those eligible for free school meals.

Confidence in employment prospects is also diminishing, with only 26% of young people in education expressing confidence in their skills and job opportunities.

Laura-Jane Rawlings, MBE, DL, Founder of Youth Employment UK, remarked: “Young people are feeling less positive about their future this year, with only 10% believing they can access quality work where they live. On top of this, they are being forced to compromise on safety, quality, cost or location to access education, training and employment opportunities. The sense of unfairness is being felt by all young people, whoever and wherever they are.

“Young people tell us that they don’t want to feel like this and actually would love nothing more than to have access to good opportunities; they just do not believe those opportunities exist for them.”

As experts in youth employment, Youth Employment UK recommends expanding access to youth services. Local opportunities for enrichment and volunteering are seen as essential for building young people’s confidence and resilience.

The report also calls for improved support systems. Key transition stages, such as entering the workforce or higher education, are times when young people require the most assistance. Addressing barriers to mental health care, housing, and financial support during these periods is critical.

Youth Employment UK further advises creating a hyper-local young person’s guarantee, which includes developing quality training, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities within local communities, as well as tackling obstacles like transportation costs.

Finally, greater employer engagement is needed, with companies urged to adopt the Good Youth Employment Standards to ensure young people have access to quality jobs that support their growth.

The full Youth Voice Census report is available for download on the Youth Employment UK website.

Navigating Employment Tribunals: A Step-by-Step Overview

Employment tribunals are legal proceedings that resolve disputes between employers and employees. They are independent judicial bodies that operate outside of the court system and are designed to provide a fair and impartial resolution to disputes between employers and employees. In this section, we will outline the step-by-step process of employment tribunals, giving employers a clear understanding of how the tribunals work.

The employment tribunal process typically begins when an employee files a claim against their employer. The claim must be filed within three months from the last day of employment or the event that led to the dispute. The claim form will include details about the claim, including the nature of the dispute and the remedy being sought.

Once a claim has been filed, the employer will receive a copy of the claim form and have the opportunity to respond to the claim. The employer must respond within 28 days and include their version of events and any evidence they wish to rely on.

Following the employer’s response, the employment tribunal will set a date for a preliminary hearing. The purpose of the preliminary hearing is to identify the key issues in the case and determine if there are any procedural issues that need to be resolved before the substantive hearing.

After the preliminary hearing, the employment tribunal will set a date for the substantive hearing, which is the main hearing where evidence is presented and witnesses are called. The tribunal will consider all the evidence presented and make a final decision, which will be communicated in writing to both parties.

If either party is dissatisfied with the decision, they may appeal to the Employment Appeal Tribunal.

It’s important for employers to understand the employment tribunal process and be prepared to navigate it effectively. By working with outsourced HR services, employers can receive expert guidance and support throughout the entire process, ensuring compliance with employment tribunal laws and regulations.

Gary McGaghey Explains Why Kindness Is Key to Good Leadership https://www.newsanyway.com/2021/09/10/gary-mcgaghey-explains-why-kindness-is-key-to-good-leadership/ Fri, 10 Sep 2021 08:30:24 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=31973 How to improve your leadership skills with kindness and compassion.

Every day, managers and employees face unexpected challenges at work. This has always been the case. But the level of difficulties we face soared last year when COVID-19 put millions of people in immensely difficult – sometimes devastating – situations. In fact, at the time, early research found that the pandemic had a negative impact on 42 percent [CM1] of survey respondents’ mental health. Since then, deeply concerning stories and stats surrounding mental health struggles have flooded the news and social media.

That’s why the divisional and group CFO Gary McGaghey emphasises the importance of upholding kindness and compassion in all aspects of our lives, including our working lives. That said, he notes that the notion of kindness often slips when CFOs and other senior leaders navigate crises, especially when managing layoffs, new technologies, market downturns, and countless other difficulties. The stats highlight this problem. For example, a recent survey found that only 45 percent [CM2] of respondents strongly agree that their employers care about their wellbeing.

But it’s not always about employers lacking compassion. Similar behaviour can manifest in any team member who is under stress. Gary McGaghey explains that burnout is common when employees struggle to meet deadlines or to work with those around them. Petty conflict, short tempers, and exposed nerves can all contribute to a lack of kindness. But, now we’ve seen how much of an impact COVID-19 has had on our families, friends, and colleagues, offering kindness and compassion in the workplace is now more important than ever.

Leaders Who Prioritise Kindness

Despite the challenges and pressures that come with leadership, many leaders have prioritised kindness in their roles and proven success as a result. Think legends like King Solomon, human rights activists like Desmond Tutu, and modern-day executives like Mary Barra, who many admire for her employee-centric approach to her role as the CEO of General Motors. Inspirational leaders like these have emphasised that consistent kindness, encouragement, and a genuine interest in employees’ mental health are not a sign of weakness or a sign of a leader who is relinquishing authority. Another example is New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has responded to criticisms[CM3]  that her empathetic nature makes her unassertive.

‘I totally rebel against that,’ she said. ‘I refuse to believe that you cannot be both compassionate and strong.’

We often think of kindness as an innate quality – something that we offer naturally. But kindness is teachable. For example, Ritchie Davidson from the University of Wisconsin compares practising kindness to weight training, explaining that we can build our ‘compassion muscles’ by responding to others’ struggles with care and a desire to help.

Gary McGaghey notes that kindness is calming, contagious, and healing. We can’t overestimate its power. Acts of kindness help us release oxytocin (a hormone that regulates our emotions) and activate the part of the brain that makes us feel pleasure. That’s why Mayo Clinic encourages us to improve our health by setting goals to be kinder to others and express sincerely felt kindness to our co-workers[CM4] . Meanwhile, Psychology Today has found that kind employers can build morale, reduce absenteeism, and improve employee retention. Kind bosses may even help employees live longer [CM5] by reducing their stress levels, which is key to cardiovascular health.

Gary McGaghey’s Seven Tips to Lead With Kindness

The pandemic has reminded us to instil kindness and compassion in our workplace roles. But how can leaders best achieve this? Here, Gary McGaghey shares seven tips that business leaders can use to weave kindness and empathy into their workplace interactions.

  1. Check in with your team. It’s essential that your employees know you’re willing to help. Show them that you’re there for them when they need to discuss their worries, even if that means making yourself available outside of work hours.
  2. Listen to your team members. Listen carefully and avoid judgement. It’s okay if you’re not sure how to respond to your employees’ concerns right away. The most important thing is that you make space for others to tell you how they’re really doing. Even if your employees don’t want to share their worries in detail, it’s knowing they can that’s important.
  3. Ask your employees how you can help. Whether an employee simply needs you to validate their personal challenges, direct them to mental health resources, or create a support group, they need to know that you can – and will – help.
  4. Survey your employees to understand how they’re coping. For example, the MIT Sloan Management Review has analysed the results of surveys [CM6] that several companies used to monitor remote workers’ mental health over the COVID-19 lockdown. These companies found that the pandemic affected remote workers who live alone differently than remote workers who live with their families and have young children. You can use insights from surveys like these to implement changes that will help your team. For example, one company set up daily virtual coffee breaks for the employees who live alone. Other companies addressed the exhaustion that many workers who live with family faced while working from home. It’s important that leaders never make their teams feel they must regularly work extreme hours.
  5. Let your team know you know they’re doing their best. COVID-19-related budget cuts have left many employees working harder than ever. Many worry their jobs are at risk and work extreme hours to reduce the risk of making the redundancy list. Too many receive no recognition for this. Sincerely thank your team as often as you can.
  6. Reveal your strengths and weaknesses. If you’re honest about your weaknesses, your employees will know you’re not pretending to be someone you’re not. Being your authentic self is key to showing kindness, especially when you embrace the fact that other team members offer skills and/or characteristics that complement yours.
  7. Ask for your employees’ opinions. Fight the instinct to follow your own perspective during decision-making processes. Instead, see what others think. When you actively seek the opinions of people who disagree with you, they’ll feel valued. Rather than responding to others’ opinions with ‘yes but,’ try responding with ‘yes and’. Pixar calls this technique ‘plussing’[CM7] . The idea is to improve ideas without using judgemental language.

Kindness is up there with empathy and emotional intelligence when it comes to the most important soft skills for a leader. Now, post-pandemic, it’s arguably the most important. Kindness should be a priority for all managers and employees, but Gary McGaghey encourages CFOs and other senior managers in private equity companies, who are often under immense pressure, to pause and make sure they’re offering the support employees need.

Gary McGaghey considers kindness and authentic leadership the keys to building, nurturing, and leading great teams. Kindness is especially important when it comes to helping good team members become great team members. He reminds CFOs that having fun and showing kindness makes teams deliver their best performance. He also advises CFOs to embrace speed as the currency of success and not to get wrapped up in ‘what the spreadsheet says’. Instead, he advises CFOs to accept the fact that they’ll make mistakes when they have to move quickly. When this happens, correct the course by taking calculated risks to keep up with the demands of the role. Correcting mistakes doesn’t have to get in the way of the kindness you offer as a leader. If you are looking to create presentations about leadership, then check out these leadership templates.

Alexei Orlov and The Point of Distinction https://www.newsanyway.com/2021/09/10/alexei-orlov-and-the-point-of-distinction/ Fri, 10 Sep 2021 08:23:51 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=31966 Within the winding, convoluted, and often overwhelming paths people traverse throughout the course of their lives, individuals are, in their own ways, simultaneously unique and unremarkable. Within the mundane lies the extraordinary; within the extraordinary lies the mundane. And at the end of the day, people are just trying to survive, find their own version of contentment, and perhaps manage to make a difference in the world around them—should effort, circumstance, and possibly a bit of luck allow for it.

Recognized or still yet undiscovered, each and every individual harbors within them one or more novelties. Whether that novelty is business acumen, writing prowess, or ethereal vocals, there are always gifts to be found; and within each gift lies a point of distinction. A point of distinction is something of the unique, something which makes a person’s particular gift salient and admirable in its own right. It’s that one extra step above which separates the good from great and the proficient from the excellent.

Alexei Orlov’s Personal Journey

Alexei Orlov has spent the majority of his adult life exploring, expanding, and pushing the boundaries of his gift for entrepreneurship. Those outside the realm of entrepreneurship’s day-to-day, inner workings might perceive such ventures as heavily relying on the skills of logic and analysis; and while it is true that such skills are absolutely advantageous, succeeding within the world of business also requires a profound amount of courage and creativity.

Throughout Alexei Orlov’s career, he has demonstrated he has both. In his early days, he intended on pursuing a leadership role within the church. He began working towards his goal of becoming a priest by enrolling in seminary; however, an unexpected family emergency necessitated his return home. This period of time, while initially fraught with uncertainty, ultimately proved to be transitional as it allowed him to reassess his aspirations and unearth his true calling: entrepreneurship.

Alexei Orlov’s Point of Distinction

After this moment of realization, he jumped in headfirst. He quickly found he thrived in leadership roles, a rather rare trait in general, and was able to offer a degree of unconventionality and ingenuity to his work which contributed to his rise to the top. However, if one were to ask Alexei Orlov how he perceives himself, he wouldn’t necessarily say has a God-given gift for business. He believes the key to his success is his unwavering intentionality—making every moment count—and his humble and sincere willingness to learn from those around him. This approach is what has ultimately become his point of distinction.

The Power of Others

Success, particularly financial success, has a tendency to bring out the worst characteristics in people: greed, hubris, haughtiness, short-sightedness, and more. Those who have attained success often attribute their accomplishments entirely to themselves, consciously or unconsciously failing to recognize the power of teamwork and collaboration, and overvalue their own individual roles within their various entrepreneurial ventures.

That doesn’t mean such individuals haven’t achieved their goals without their own hard work and effort, or their roles aren’t crucial or inherently valuable. It means, for many, the air is thinner at the top; and when you’re breathing in a bit too much of your own carbon dioxide, it can be difficult to see the value in the oxygen of those beneath you without looking down.

In other words, once a person loses sight of the worthiness of listening to and learning from others, not just from superiors and colleagues but from subordinates as well, they become ever more vulnerable to their own inevitable folly. As such, intentionality and humility can go a very long way. For Alexei Orlov, these very qualities were the point of distinction which brought him all the way to the top.

The Freedom Wheels. Transform any kitchen chair into a 360º spinning chair. https://www.newsanyway.com/2021/04/01/the-freedom-wheels-transform-any-kitchen-chair-into-a-360o-spinning-chair/ Thu, 01 Apr 2021 12:19:50 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=23306 https://thefreedomwheels.com
Prague, 1st April 2021
Tired of working from your kitchen chair? This might be the solution to your problems!

Before 2020, working full-time from home was a privilege of very few professionals from a relatively small line of work. Maybe because of this very reason, we were never trained to look at our homes as the place to have video calls, meetings, interviews, and so on. But when the pandemic came, forcing everyone to adapt to a new, remote workspace, we noticed that our homes differ a lot from our former offices.

RemoteWorkers, an online platform designed to connect professionals to worldwide job opportunities remotely, created a brand-new cheeky product meant to give remote workers some of the freedom they lost since they were displaced from their offices: The Freedom Wheels. The video claims the “new product” is only available on Thursday, April 1st, 2021 – and with very limited stock.

The product promises to be adaptable to any type of chair in the household, and is also available in many different colors, making it easier to match the furniture of your apartment. The benefits go beyond its name already suggest freedom to move around the house without having to stand up from your chair, preventing unwanted scratches on the floor, and even enhancing the work performance as productivity goes along with the level of comfort your workstation provides.

The April’s Fool prank is, of course, a mockery of a problem that, in reality, resonates to many workers that suddenly found themselves forced to work from their own homes since last year. The idea of transforming any kitchen chair into an office chair with some sort of “magic wheels” that adapts to any kind of chair is, to say the least, interesting.

But for those who expected to join a waiting list to get their Freedom Wheels, a piece of advice: no wheels would magically transform a random chair from your house into an ergonomic office chair that is actually beneficial to your health (and productivity!).

It’s safe to say that, out of this April’s Fool fake launch, one thing is for certain: the home office culture is here to stay, and for anyone intending to find remote job opportunities, RemoteWorkers is the right platform to begin your search. And not only on April 1st.

Most Common Examples of Workplace Discrimination https://www.newsanyway.com/2021/02/18/most-common-examples-of-workplace-discrimination/ Thu, 18 Feb 2021 12:46:32 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=21178 Our workplaces are supposed to be a space where a group of people gathers together to complete a shared goal.  Although most conversations should usually stay attached to this goal and job, we’re social creatures by nature.  Unfortunately, with socialization comes people who are willing to show their unsavory, or hurtful, opinions without caring about those around them.  This discrimination can hurt their coworkers and create a space that doesn’t feel welcoming to anyone except for that employee.

Here are the top examples of workplace discrimination.  Nobody should have to deal with any of these when they’re just trying to work.

Retaliation Discrimination

The leading cause of discrimination cases and the number one type of discrimination is retaliation discrimination.  This type of discrimination isn’t against the color of a person’s skin or gender but instead about people fearing speaking up.  If an employee doesn’t trust human resources to handle something with care and keeps from talking about discrimination in fear of retaliation: they need to speak with a lawyer.

An impartial HR company is a great addition to any company, as the professionals are all non-bias.

Racial Discrimination

Everyone knows what this type of discrimination is and why it’s terrible: and yet it’s still prevalent o this day.  Racial discrimination is when someone verbally, financially, or physically abuses someone else due to their skin color or where they’re from.  A large part of this discrimination is harmful stereotypes and cruel assumptions.

Sexual Orientation Discrimination

This type of discrimination has been under a lot of attention lately, which has brought it to people’s minds sometimes for the first time.  Harassing someone because of their sexuality, and making rude or hateful comments about it, can’t be tolerated at any level.  Although you can attempt to retrain and show someone they’re wrong, it doesn’t always work.

Disability Discrimination

Jokes about people with disabilities have simmered down a lot in recent years, but it’s still something that lurks in break rooms and work cafeterias. The disability can range anywhere from lupus to wheelchair usage, but each offense needs to be taken seriously.  People with disabilities have just as much of a right to work in peace as anyone else.

Gender Discrimination

This type of discrimination is one of the most well known and documented.  People of a particular gender will get forced into a specific job because of stereotypes, or employees will pester or harass a coworker of a different gender for fun.  It isn’t appropriate, and people deserve to be able to work without this stress.

This type of harassment extends to transgender workers who should be afforded the same rights and protections as anyone else.

Age Discrimination

Discrimination against someone due to their age is a strange and new thing for many people o consider: but it’s there.  Whether an older hopefully doesn’t get the job because of his age, or a young and skilled teacher gets turned down for the vice-principal role because she’s only 26, despite her capable history at the school.  It’s an unfortunate type of discrimination that leaves people with the feeling of anger and embarrassment that nobody deserves to feel.
