US Food & Beverage Industry Faces Rising Costs and Economic Uncertainty https://www.newsanyway.com/2024/09/17/us-food-beverage-industry-faces-rising-costs-and-economic-uncertainty/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 10:29:44 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=137237 US Food & Beverage Sector Faces Rising Costs and Economic Uncertainty, Expert Market Report Reveals

New insights from Expert Market’s 2024 Food & Beverage (F&B) Industry Report highlight the significant challenges facing US food and beverage businesses. According to the report, which is sponsored by the hospitality platform Toast, 56% of F&B owners are grappling with managing operational costs and profitability. Of these, 52% are particularly worried about rising rental costs. Economic uncertainty is the second major concern, affecting 52% of the respondents.

Key Challenges for US F&B Businesses:

  1. Managing Operational Costs and Profitability (56%)
  2. Economic Uncertainty (52%)
  3. Coping with Seasonality and Business Fluctuations (37%)

Impact of Economic Instability on F&B Businesses

The Expert Market report underscores how financial and economic uncertainties are impacting the F&B sector. The inflationary pressures experienced since the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt, despite inflation rates dropping from a peak of 7% in 2021 to 2.97% in recent times. However, this rate remains higher than the pre-pandemic level of around 1.9% in 2018.

One of the primary concerns for F&B businesses is the increase in rental costs. The report reveals that 52% of F&B industry workers, including owners, are troubled by rising rents. This issue is compounded by broader inflationary pressures, with 37% of respondents citing ingredient cost fluctuations as a significant operational challenge. The strain is evident from data showing that 43% of small business owners in the US struggled to pay their full rent on time as of April 2024.

A Glimmer of Optimism

Despite these challenges, the future holds some promise. Predictions for 2025 suggest that concerns about economic uncertainty will decrease from 20% to 16%. This optimism is supported by expectations of a recovering American economy, with consumer spending on the rise and inflation and interest rates potentially decreasing in late 2024 to 2025.

To navigate the evolving economic landscape, Expert Market advises F&B businesses to adopt targeted strategies such as advanced financial management software and customer loyalty programs. These measures can help businesses adapt and thrive amid economic shifts.

Expert Insight

Chris Maillard, Editor at Expert Market, commented on the report’s findings: “As our research indicates, the food and beverage industry has faced significant challenges recently. Inflation and rising costs for energy-intensive kitchen equipment and prime rental sites have been particularly tough. However, it’s encouraging to see ongoing optimism. Savvy operators are streamlining their processes and systems, which will position them to recover more swiftly as the economy improves.”

Briefly Bio launches with $1.2m funding to help scientists reproduce complex experiments https://www.newsanyway.com/2024/07/17/briefly-bio-launches-with-1-2m-funding-to-help-scientists-reproduce-complex-experiments/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 11:14:50 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=136146 London, UK – July 17, 2024; Science is in a reproducibility crisis. In preclinical research, it’s estimated that over 50% of efforts to reproduce experiments fail, costing the industry over $50bn each year. Solving this problem, techbio startup Briefly Bio has launched with software that makes lab work more reproducible by helping scientists capture and share their work clearly and consistently.

With this launch, Briefly Bio has secured a $1.2m pre-seed funding round. It was led by Compound VC, with participation from NP Hard, Tiny VC and angel investors across tech and biotech.

Biological experiments have become increasingly complex. With this growing complexity, details that are critical to our shared understanding are often undocumented and lost. This makes scientific collaboration inefficient: lab scientists struggle to reproduce and build on top of each other’s experiments; data scientists do not have the necessary context to analyse the data produced in their labs; and automation teams lack all details to build robotic labs.

Briefly Bio is tackling this, creating a shared language for experiments that is consistent across scientists, and clear for any collaborator to understand. Their software uses AI to convert existing experiment descriptions into this consistent format, while automatically filling in gaps and spotting errors. This helps capture the value of every experiment that is run, and enables scientists to learn from each other’s work.

Briefly was founded by Dr Katya Putintseva, Harry Rickerby and Staffan Piledahl. They have varied backgrounds, through academia, tech, biotech and robotics. Before founding the company, the three worked together at drug discovery startup LabGenius, where they helped build its ML-driven antibody discovery platform.

Harry Rickerby, CEO and co-founder at Briefly Bio, commented: “Scientific methods are a bit like software code, they are a set of instructions that define how an experiment should be run. The majority of this ‘code’ is incomplete, since writing up each experiment completely takes a huge amount of effort. Now, with LLMs, there’s a way to make these methods consistent without imposing on a scientists’ workflow. As Github helped software engineers collaborate and build on each other’s code, we think Briefly can help scientists and engineers do the same with their experiments.”

With AI and high throughput experimentation, there is an opportunity for huge improvements in the efficiency of scientific discovery. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being invested through startups and big pharma to take advantage. To realise this potential, science needs more consistency and transparency in how these datasets are generated, since the value of any model is a product of the data it has been trained on. Briefly Bio is building this necessary layer of infrastructure to accelerate scientific discovery in biology.

“This is a revolution in documenting lab experiments. It is the future of foolproof knowledge-sharing between scientists” said Dr Gena Nikitin, Founder of Miphic. While Dr Maria Anastasina, Wet Lab Head at the Evolutionary and Synthetic Biology Unit, OIST, added: “Briefly has become a core part of our lab’s knowledge base and a great help to me in training researchers and lab management”. And Suparna Kumar, PhD student at Weill Cornell commented: “Briefly Bio has become an indispensable part of my lab routine because it helps me save so much time”.

Rob Harkness, CTO of Biosero, added: “We’re very excited by what Breifly.Bio can offer with their software tools. Inconsistent and incomplete data can compromise research, making it difficult to reproduce experiments and undermining trust in scientific results. Digitalising and automating laboratory operations can address this, but this effort faces challenges of inefficiency and high error rates, primarily due to the diverse formats in which workflows are presented. Briefly.bio addresses this by converting scientific protocols written in natural language into a common and consistent structured format. This facilitates much faster design and implementation of automated systems, ensuring all critical information is captured and utilized effectively. The result is a significant boost in workflow integration, efficiency, and data quality, all of which are crucial for generating reliable experimental results. This leads to more comprehensive and innovative solutions in lab automation that can only help accelerate scientific research.”

Shelby Newsad, Investor at Compound, commented: “The crux of successful science lies in consistent and executable methods. Whereas most bio software companies focus on data and its analysis, Briefly goes upstream to the core problem space of reproducibility via protocols. For the first time in science history, this incentivizes scientists to share more of their previously tacit knowledge. The fact that Briefly-made methods can be built and collaborated upon creates unique potential for network effects from their software.”

Briefly Bio is creating a future where scientists can stop reinventing the wheel – spending time and resources on experiments that they can’t reproduce. This will enable scientists to produce datasets that will quickly expand our understanding of biology.

Report Finds Top Law Firms Shifting from Fossil Fuel Work to Renewables Focus https://www.newsanyway.com/2024/07/17/report-finds-top-law-firms-shifting-from-fossil-fuel-work-to-renewables-focus/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 09:53:42 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=136143 Amidst a surge in student activism, Law Students for Climate Accountability (LSCA) is releasing its 2024 Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard, marking the fifth annual report on the Vault 100’s connections to fossil fuels. Each edition of the Scorecard has underscored the legal industry’s significant role in enabling the fossil fuel sector to consolidate power and evade accountability. Meanwhile, climate change relentlessly impacts vulnerable communities and the environment.

For the first time, LSCA is publishing a multinational report shedding additional light on the roles of large firms in the U.K. and Ireland. The data shows that after years of mounting pressure, Vault 100 firms have begun to make marginal progress. This year, the report notes a decrease in Vault 100 firms’ transactional work and lobbying on behalf of fossil fuel companies.

“As we launch the Scorecard, we are more committed than ever to exposing the legal industry’s role in perpetuating climate injustice,” said Sean Torres, a rising 3L at CUNY School of Law. “This year’s Scorecard, our most comprehensive yet, expands our scrutiny to the U.K. market and highlights incremental progress and ongoing challenges. Recent regulatory decisions, like FERC denying a hydroelectric project on Navajo Nation lands and New York’s Third Department halting a natural gas facility under the CLCPA, reflect the evolving legal landscape and a cultural understanding towards a more livable future. As regulations evolve to address the climate crisis, the legal industry must also change with the times for the betterment of our future.”

A new high of seven firms received an A ranking for 2024. In addition to a decrease in fossil fuel transaction work, the data shows that firms are growing their renewable energy practices, though still alongside very sizable fossil fuel practices:

  • From 2019-2023, Vault 100 firms facilitated $2.89 trillion in fossil fuel transactions, engaged in 518 instances of climate-exacerbating representation, and received $32.97 million in compensation for lobbying on behalf of fossil fuel interests.
  • Overall, the Vault 100 firms facilitated about $121 billion less (4.02%) in fossil fuel transactions in the 2019-2023 data collection period than in the 2018-2022 data collection period. The Vault 100 also received approximately $1.4 million less (4.09%) in lobbying compensation in the 2019-2023 data collection period.
  • Despite the marginal decrease in fossil fuels work, Vault 100 firms facilitated about $178 billion more (20.17%) in renewable energy transactions than in the prior data collection period, conducting transactions worth a total of $878 billion. However, these transactions still pale in comparison to the $2.89 trillion in fossil fuel transactions facilitated by the Vault 100 from 2019-2023.
  • Many of the firms undertaking the most substantial amounts of fossil fuels work have not slowed down even as they ramp up their renewable energy practices. Akin Gump, for example, received the most compensation for fossil fuel-related lobbying from 2018-2022 ($7.1 million), and in this year’s dataset spanning 2019-23, received nearly one million dollars more in compensation ($7.9 million), while increasing its renewable energy industry lobbying by nearly 60%.
  • Even more firms earned F grades, which firms can earn by doing at least one of the following:
    1. Earning more than 30 involvement points for cases furthering climate change;
    2. Facilitating more than $40 billion in fossil fuel transactions; or
    3. Receiving more than $2 million in compensation for fossil fuel lobbying.
  • In all, 42 firms managed to perform the extraordinary amount of fossil fuel work necessary to receive an F, while a further 34 earned D grades.

LSCA’s Scorecard also comes as students nationwide engage in robust political demonstration and activism, demonstrating that this generation of new legal professionals are more than willing to make decisions following their values. Law students continue to hold the power to punish those firms by opting to work for a competitor with a better track record on climate. It is time for the Vault 100 firms to join those advocates and invest their resources into a more sustainable future — with students leading the way.

“The latest Law Students for Climate Accountability report should be a wake-up call for the legal industry––the issue of the planet-wrecking emissions they enable isn’t going away,” said Vinod Aithal, Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) student, London Metropolitan University. “While some firms are moving in a positive direction, too many still aren’t doing enough. We hope this report helps students make informed choices about the paths they will take. Lower-scoring firms need to take notice of how their ranking appears to the talent pool and implement the necessary changes to safeguard our planet for the next generation.”

The Scorecard calls on law firms to phase out their work for the fossil fuel industry and seeks to provide support to law students and lawyers who are concerned about the climate crisis. Law firms have faced increasing pressure over their work for fossil fuel clients in recent years. Students protested four Paul Weiss recruitment receptions in early 2020 and over 600 students have pledged to boycott the firm as long as it represents Exxon.

This spring, Law Students for Climate Accountability documented a sitting Supreme Court Justice’s ties with fossil fuel companies and highlighted the Vault 100’s impact on local communities. This comes at a crucial juncture as climate litigation movements have increasingly reaffirmed their power within courtrooms and collected significant victories across the globe.

As students return to campuses this year, on the heels of an increase in organizing across the nation and yet another record-breaking hot summer, law students are preparing to increase pressure on firms who refuse to adopt an ethical standard for their work and end their contribution to the climate crisis.

The report can be viewed at ls4ca.org/scorecard.

Law Students for Climate Accountability is an organization of law students from across the country who are committed to holding the legal industry accountable for its role in the climate crisis. For more information, visit www.ls4ca.org.

Funeral Industry Booms: Funeral Directors Increase by 28% https://www.newsanyway.com/2024/07/15/funeral-industry-booms-funeral-directors-increase-by-28/ Mon, 15 Jul 2024 12:12:24 +0000 https://www.newsanyway.com/?p=136082 Amsterdam, 10-07-2024 – The UK‘s funeral industry is thriving with a significant 28% increase in funeral directors over the past decade, according to a study by BoldData. This steady yearly rise has led to more funeral directors than ever on the country’s high streets. With nearly one in five people in England and Wales now aged 65 or over—a figure that has risen by 20% in the last decade—demand for funeral services continues to grow. However, industry leaders warn of a critical issue: the lack of regulation.

Nearly one in five people in England and Wales are 65 or over. The number of people aged over 65 has surged by 20% over the past decade. Highlighting the increasing demand for funeral services. The demographic shift is clearly reflected in the numbers: from 4.015 funeral directors in 2014 to 5.125 in 2024. A rise of 28%. The upward trajectory is even reflected on our TV screens with soaps including Coronation Street and Eastenders now featuring funeral directors as prominent characters.

No statutory regulation

Andrew Judd, CEO of The National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD), credits the rise in the number of funeral directors to the fact there are ‘no barriers to entry’ – as there’s no statutory regulation. Andrew said: “At the moment anyone can set up as a funeral director, I think that’s one of the reasons that there are so many, there are no barriers to entry. Generally most funeral directors do a very good job, but at the moment there’s still the opportunity for someone to start a business and operate it outside of scrutiny.” Funeral directors can voluntarily become members of industry bodies such as the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) or the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF). However firms can choose opt not to take part in this voluntary regulation and can operate without scrutiny.

This cake can serve one person or a large version can be ordered online for up to six people.

The collection also includes a raspberry, pistachio tart, with an almond base topped with dark chocolate, pistachio cream, fresh raspberries and pistachios.

All of these delicious desserts are perfect for a picnic in the park or garden, celebration or afternoon treat.

The Midsommar menu will launch at all Ole & Steen locations on Tuesday June 25 and these three new cakes will sit alongside the brand’s signature cream cakes including The Strawberry Tart and the Gateau Marcel.

To celebrate the launch of the cakes Ole & Steen is holding a special champagne VIP media event at their Wigmore Street branch in St Christopher’s Place, central London.

The Wigmore Street branch will be specially decorated in a summer floral arch which promises to be a spectacular entrance to memorable night of flavoursome celebrations.

Ole & Steen UK Managing Director, Graham Hollinshead, said: “Our all new Midsommar cake range is an exciting addition to the Ole & Steen cream cake selection. We hope our guests will be just as excited to try the new cakes which have been developed to champion summer flowers and flavours. The Lemon Cheesecake is my particular favourite, with sweet, zesty flavours it won’t disappoint!”

Ole & Steen is known as the ‘Home of the Social’ with the Cinnamon Social being their most popular and iconic item. Best shared with good company as a 12 or 6 slice bake, or as an individual treat, by the slice, any time of day.

Last month Ole & Steen launched the exciting new menu which focuses on quality and premium produce featuring new toasties, traditional open rye sandwiches, premium drinks and breakfast buns that can be enjoyed inside or al fresco as we embrace the summer season.
